What’s In A Name?

California was named after a mythical island of black women who kept man-eating griffins as pets.

”No one knows for certain why Montalvo chose the names, but some historians believe he was inspired by the Arabic word caliph, or ruler.”

Given the little we in the West understand the term β€˜caliphate’, I do find this interesting … particularly since how caliphate like areas of CA have become … entertainment, technology, software, liberal thinking …. not always for the better good of all … but then neither is a caliphate.
